How does the Watt Converter work?
Both units are converted through power's base unit (W), so any of the 9 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Exact definitions are preferred throughout: the metre, the inch and the pound all have them. Only where a unit depends on a measured constant is an accepted published value substituted.

Watts and horsepower
1 mechanical (imperial) horsepower equals exactly 745.6998715822702 watts: a figure that traces back to James Watt himself, who coined "horsepower" in the 1780s to market his steam engines by comparing their output to a familiar reference: a working horse.
Worth knowing
- Watt’s original estimate is now generally considered somewhat generous. A horse can sustain roughly 1 horsepower of continuous work for extended periods, but can briefly produce several times that in short bursts, meaning the unit slightly overstates a horse’s typical sustained output.
- There is also a separate metric horsepower (PS), used across much of Europe and Japan for vehicle specifications, defined as exactly 735.49875 watts, about 1.4% less than the mechanical horsepower, which means a car advertised at "300 PS" is actually closer to 296 mechanical horsepower.
- Household appliance wattage gives a useful sense of scale: a hair dryer might draw 1,500 W (about 2 hp), while a full-size car engine can produce well over 100,000 W (over 130 hp) at peak output.
