How does the Inch to CM work?
Both units are converted through length's base unit (m), so any of the 19 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Where a unit has an exact legal definition, that exact value is used rather than a rounded one. The 1959 international agreement fixing the inch at 25.4 mm is the best-known example; the same principle applies throughout.

Inches and centimetres
1 inch equals exactly 2.54 cm: an exact legal definition since 1959, not a rounded approximation, so this conversion never loses precision no matter how many decimal places you keep.
Worth knowing
- A fast approximation is inches × 2.5, which is simple to do in your head but understates the true value by about 1.6%, fine for a rough estimate, not for anything that needs to be cut to fit.
- Woodworking and machining in the US still specify dimensions in inches (often as fractions like 3/4"), while most of the rest of the world works in millimetres. This converter is the bridge, but note that fractional inches round to slightly different mm values than decimal inches of the same nominal size.
- Paper sizes are a classic mismatch: US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches (21.59 × 27.94 cm), while the ISO A4 standard used almost everywhere else is 21.0 × 29.7 cm. They are close enough to look similar but do not interconvert cleanly.
