What the MM to Inch does
MM to Inch: 1 mm = 0.039370079 in, so multiply a millimetre value by 0.039370079 to get inch, or divide to go back. Example: 1 mm = 0.039370079 in.
Give the MM to Inch your Value, From and To and it works out Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion. Everything recomputes live, which makes it easy to test a few scenarios in a row.
Converting once from the original figure beats chaining approximations. The MM to Inch exists to take that particular chore off your hands.
Your data stays on your machine. Once the page has loaded you could disconnect entirely and it would still work.
The field table, the method and a worked example are documented after the tool for anyone who wants to check the working.
What do the MM to Inch fields mean?
The MM to Inch uses 3 inputs. It opens with a complete example loaded, which is usually the quickest way to understand what a field means.
| Field | What to enter | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Value | required | 1 |
| From | choose from Nanometre (nm), Micrometre (µm), Angstrom (Å), Millimetre (mm), Centimetre (cm) or Metre (m) | Millimetre (mm) |
| To | choose from Nanometre (nm), Micrometre (µm), Angstrom (Å), Millimetre (mm), Centimetre (cm) or Metre (m) | Inch (in) |
How does the MM to Inch work?
Both units are converted through length's base unit (m), so any of the 19 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Every factor here is the defined one, not a textbook approximation. That matters more than it sounds: rounding a factor early is the usual reason two converters disagree in the fourth decimal place.
Worked example
These are the values the MM to Inch loads by default, and the result it produces from them. The numbers below come straight from the default inputs, so you can verify them against the live tool.
| Value | 1 |
|---|---|
| From | Millimetre (mm) |
| To | Inch (in) |
| Result | 0.039370079 in |
|---|---|
| How it was calculated | 1 mm = 0.039370079 in, so 1 × 0.039370079 = 0.039370079 in |
| Reverse conversion | 25.4 mm (if you meant 1 in) |
Millimetres and inches
25.4 mm equals exactly 1 inch, so 1 mm equals exactly 1/25.4 inch (about 0.03937 in): a fixed, exact relationship rather than a rounded one.
Worth knowing
- Engineering drawings from countries on different measurement systems frequently need this exact conversion for tolerancing: a machined part specified to ±0.1 mm needs the equivalent inch tolerance stated precisely, not rounded to two decimal places.
- A quick mental check: 1 mm is roughly 1/25th of an inch, and 5 mm is close to 3/16 inch (the true value is 0.197", about 5% off), useful for a ballpark estimate but not for fitting a part.
- Metric and imperial screw threads (e.g. M6 vs. 1/4-20 UNC) are not interchangeable even when their diameters convert closely: the thread pitch and profile differ, so matching diameter alone does not mean the fastener fits.

How to use it
- Set Value.
- Pick a value for From: the options are Nanometre (nm), Micrometre (µm), Angstrom (Å), Millimetre (mm), Centimetre (cm) or Metre (m).
- Pick a value for To: the options are Nanometre (nm), Micrometre (µm), Angstrom (Å), Millimetre (mm), Centimetre (cm) or Metre (m).
- Because there is no round trip to a server, updating on every keystroke costs nothing.
- Check Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion on the right.
- To keep the result, either copy the link or print the page. Both preserve what is on screen.
What this tool does not do
- Conversion factors use SI definitions; some industries use their own rounded factors.
- Repeated conversions compound rounding, so convert once from the original value where possible.
- No allowance is made for local rules, regional variations or house conventions.
- The tool trusts your numbers completely, so a mis-keyed digit propagates straight through.
