What the Surface Tension Converter does

Surface Tension Converter: 1 N/m = 1000 dyn/cm, so multiply a newton per metre value by 1000 to get dyne per centimetre, or divide to go back. Example: 1 N/m = 1000 dyn/cm.

Give the Surface Tension Converter your Value, From and To and it works out Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion. Adjust anything and the figures re-derive on the spot.

Most people who open the Surface Tension Converter are engineers checking a datasheet. Converting once from the original figure beats chaining approximations.

The page holds your values in memory and forgets them the moment you close it.

The field table, the method and a worked example are documented after the tool for anyone who wants to check the working.

What do the Surface Tension Converter fields mean?

The Surface Tension Converter uses 3 inputs. A filled form means you can test one idea immediately instead of sourcing every input first.

FieldWhat to enterDefault
Value required 1
From choose from Newton per metre (N/m), Millinewton per metre (mN/m), Dyne per centimetre (dyn/cm) or Pound-force per foot (lbf/ft) Newton per metre (N/m)
To choose from Newton per metre (N/m), Millinewton per metre (mN/m), Dyne per centimetre (dyn/cm) or Pound-force per foot (lbf/ft) Dyne per centimetre (dyn/cm)

How does the Surface Tension Converter work?

1 N/m = 1000 dyn/cm → result = value × 1000

Both units are converted through surface tension's base unit (N/m), so any of the 4 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.

Every factor here is the defined one, not a textbook approximation. That matters more than it sounds: rounding a factor early is the usual reason two converters disagree in the fourth decimal place.

Worked example

These are the values the Surface Tension Converter loads by default, and the result it produces from them. Below is the same computation the tool performs on load, step by step.

Surface tension

Water has an unusually high surface tension for a liquid, about 72.8 millinewtons per metre (equivalently, 72.8 dynes per centimetre) at 20°C: a direct consequence of hydrogen bonding between water molecules, and considerably higher than most other common liquids.

Worth knowing

  • This is the property that lets certain insects (like water striders) walk on the surface of still water, and why water forms rounded droplets rather than spreading out into a flat film the way a lower-surface-tension liquid like alcohol does.
  • Adding soap or detergent to water dramatically lowers its surface tension (often to well under half its normal value), which is exactly the mechanism behind how soap helps water spread into and lift dirt and grease rather than beading up and rolling off.
  • The newton-per-metre (N/m) and dyne-per-centimetre (dyn/cm) values are numerically identical to each other despite looking like very different unit systems. 1 mN/m equals exactly 1 dyn/cm, a rare case in this converter category where the SI and CGS figures line up this cleanly.

How to use it

  1. Set Value.
  2. Pick a value for From: the options are Newton per metre (N/m), Millinewton per metre (mN/m), Dyne per centimetre (dyn/cm) or Pound-force per foot (lbf/ft).
  3. Pick a value for To: the options are Newton per metre (N/m), Millinewton per metre (mN/m), Dyne per centimetre (dyn/cm) or Pound-force per foot (lbf/ft).
  4. Skip the submit button; there is not one. Editing is enough.
  5. Check Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion on the right.
  6. Copy Link when you want to return to this exact configuration; Print when someone needs it on paper.

What this tool does not do

  • Conversion factors use SI definitions; some industries use their own rounded factors.
  • Repeated conversions compound rounding, so convert once from the original value where possible.
  • Intermediate steps are rounded only for display; if you need full precision, work from the source figures.
  • The tool trusts your numbers completely, so a mis-keyed digit propagates straight through.

Frequently asked questions

The form asks for Value, From and To. Every box already holds a working value, so nothing is mandatory before you see a result.

With the values loaded when the page opens, result comes out as 1000 dyn/cm. Adjust any field to see how much the answer depends on it.

Nothing is stored. The page has no back end to send data to, and holds your input only in memory.

No charge. Everything on the page is available without signing in.

As accurate as the inputs allow. The arithmetic itself introduces no error beyond display rounding.
