How does the Joule Converter work?
Both units are converted through energy's base unit (J), so any of the 12 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Factors follow the internationally agreed definitions. The inch has been exactly 25.4 mm since 1959, and an exact definition is used wherever one exists. Where a unit is fixed by measurement rather than by agreement, the accepted CODATA or IAU value is used.

Joules and calories
1 (thermochemical) calorie is defined as exactly 4.184 joules. The joule is the SI unit of energy, while the calorie is an older unit originally based on heating water, retained today mainly through its use in nutrition.
Worth knowing
- There are actually a few slightly different historical "calorie" definitions (thermochemical: 4.184 J; International Table: 4.1868 J) that differ from each other by a fraction of a percent, a genuinely obscure distinction, but the reason two sources can occasionally quote very slightly different calorie-to-joule figures.
- The joule itself is defined as the energy transferred when 1 newton of force moves an object 1 metre: a small unit in everyday terms (lifting a small apple about 1 metre takes roughly 1 joule of work).
- Countries that use metric units for nutrition (notably in parts of Europe and Australia) sometimes label food energy in kilojoules alongside or instead of kilocalories, which is why some packaging shows both a "kJ" and a "kcal" figure for the same food.
