Seconds and minutes
The second is the SI base unit of time; 60 seconds make exactly 1 minute, a relationship inherited from the ancient Babylonian base-60 (sexagesimal) numbering system, which also gave us 60 minutes per hour and 360 degrees in a circle.
Worth knowing
- Since 1967, the second has been defined by an exact number of oscillations of a caesium-133 atom (a physical constant), rather than as a fraction of a day. A change made because Earth’s rotation is not perfectly constant, but atomic transitions are.
- Occasional "leap seconds" are inserted into official civil time (UTC) to keep clock time synchronised with Earth’s slightly irregular rotation: these are not reflected in fixed-ratio unit conversions like this one, which assume an idealised, perfectly uniform second.
- Sports and reaction-time contexts often need sub-second precision, which is why the finer subdivisions (millisecond, microsecond) exist as their own dedicated converters on this site.
