What the Square Meter Converter does
Square Meter Converter: 1 m² = 10.76391042 ft², so multiply a square metre value by 10.76391042 to get square foot, or divide to go back. Example: 1 m² = 10.76391042 ft².
Point it at Value, From and To and it returns Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion. Each change is reflected immediately, which suits quick what-if comparisons.
Two industries often use the same word for slightly different quantities. The Square Meter Converter exists to take that particular chore off your hands.
No sign-up, no data collection, no processing queue, just code running locally.
The sections that follow cover the fields, the method, and one full example computed from the defaults.
What do the Square Meter Converter fields mean?
The Square Meter Converter uses 3 inputs. Starting values are already in place, which saves the usual blank-form hesitation about what a field wants.
| Field | What to enter | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Value | required | 1 |
| From | choose from Square millimetre (mm²), Square centimetre (cm²), Square metre (m²), Hectare (ha), Square kilometre (km²) or Square inch (in²) | Square metre (m²) |
| To | choose from Square millimetre (mm²), Square centimetre (cm²), Square metre (m²), Hectare (ha), Square kilometre (km²) or Square inch (in²) | Square foot (ft²) |
How does the Square Meter Converter work?
Both units are converted through area's base unit (m²), so any of the 16 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Definitions are taken from the SI system where one exists, and from CODATA or the IAU where a unit is established by measurement. No factor is rounded before the calculation.
Worked example
These are the values the Square Meter Converter loads by default, and the result it produces from them. The figures are the tool’s live defaults and its live output, so you can reproduce them exactly.
| Value | 1 |
|---|---|
| From | Square metre (m²) |
| To | Square foot (ft²) |
| Result | 10.76391042 ft² |
|---|---|
| How it was calculated | 1 m² = 10.76391042 ft², so 1 × 10.76391042 = 10.76391042 ft² |
| Reverse conversion | 0.09290304 m² (if you meant 1 ft²) |
Square metres and square feet
1 square foot equals exactly 0.09290304 square metres: the square of the exact 0.3048 m foot definition, so like all area conversions it is the linear factor squared, not the linear factor itself.
Worth knowing
- A common mistake is applying the linear conversion (×3.28) directly to an area figure, since area scales with the square of length, the correct area factor is roughly ×10.76, not ×3.28.
- Real-estate listings compare awkwardly across borders for exactly this reason: a 100 m² apartment is about 1,076 ft², not 328 ft², and getting this wrong understates the US-unit figure by a factor of more than 3.
- Floor-area figures in property listings sometimes measure different things entirely (carpet area vs. built-up area vs. super built-up area in some markets), which is a separate source of mismatch on top of any unit conversion.

How to use it
- Enter Value.
- Pick a value for From: the options are Square millimetre (mm²), Square centimetre (cm²), Square metre (m²), Hectare (ha), Square kilometre (km²) or Square inch (in²).
- Pick a value for To: the options are Square millimetre (mm²), Square centimetre (cm²), Square metre (m²), Hectare (ha), Square kilometre (km²) or Square inch (in²).
- Each keystroke triggers a fresh calculation, which is cheap because it happens locally.
- You get Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion back.
- The link encodes your inputs, so saving it is enough to reproduce the result later.
What this tool does not do
- Repeated conversions compound rounding, so convert once from the original value where you can.
- Conversion factors use SI definitions; some industries use their own rounded factors.
- There is no audit trail: if you need one, record the inputs alongside the output.
- Results are only as good as the inputs. Check your units before reading anything into the output.
Frequently asked questions
Only Value, From and To. Defaults are loaded for all of them, which means a single edit is enough to get a meaningful answer.
With the values loaded when the page opens, result comes out as 10.76391042 ft². That number tracks the inputs, so a small edit shows its sensitivity immediately.
No. Your browser is doing the computing, so we could not see the values even if we wanted to.
