How does the Magnetic Flux Converter work?
Both units are converted through magnetic flux's base unit (Wb), so any of the 5 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Exact definitions are preferred throughout: the metre, the inch and the pound all have them. Only where a unit depends on a measured constant is an accepted published value substituted.

Magnetic flux
The weber (Wb), named after 19th-century physicist Wilhelm Weber, is the SI unit of magnetic flux, the total amount of magnetic field passing through a given area, while the maxwell (Mx) is the older CGS equivalent, with 1 weber equal to exactly 100,000,000 (10⁸) maxwells.
Worth knowing
- Magnetic flux is closely related to, but distinct from, magnetic field strength (tesla/gauss): flux accounts for the area the field passes through as well as its strength, which is why the units and their relationships are more involved than a simple field-strength conversion.
- Electrical generators and transformers work by changing magnetic flux through a coil over time (a changing flux induces a voltage): this relationship, formalised as Faraday’s law, is the basic operating principle behind most electricity generation.
- The maxwell, like the gauss, persists mainly in older technical literature and certain specialised industries, while modern engineering and physics work almost exclusively uses the weber.
