How does the Liter Converter work?
Both units are converted through volume's base unit (L), so any of the 19 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Where a unit has an exact legal definition, that exact value is used rather than a rounded one. The 1959 international agreement fixing the inch at 25.4 mm is the best-known example; the same principle applies throughout.

Litres and gallons
1 US gallon equals exactly 3.785411784 litres. Note this is specifically the US gallon. The UK imperial gallon is a different, larger unit (4.54609 L), so a UK-labelled "gallon" figure needs a different constant entirely.
Worth knowing
- Fuel economy is the most common context: US "miles per gallon" figures use the smaller US gallon, so they are not directly comparable to a UK "miles per gallon" figure for the same car without converting for the gallon difference as well as the distance unit.
- A useful quick check: 4 litres is close to (but not exactly) 1 US gallon. The true figure is 3.785 L, about 5.7% less than 4 L, a gap worth remembering when eyeballing fuel-pump or paint-can quantities.
- Beverage and paint industries in metric countries sell by the litre in round numbers (1 L, 4 L, 20 L), while US equivalents are sized to the gallon (1 gal, 5 gal). The container sizes themselves reflect which system a market uses, independent of any label conversion.
