Kilometres per litre
Kilometres per litre (km/L) is a "distance per unit fuel" measure, like mpg, but on the metric scale: common in Japan, parts of Latin America, and various Asian markets, while most of Europe instead prefers the inverse "fuel per unit distance" convention of L/100km.
Worth knowing
- Being a distance-per-fuel unit (like mpg), km/L shares the same averaging trap: you cannot correctly average km/L figures directly across trips of different distances or efficiencies without first converting to a fuel-per-distance basis, doing the average, and converting back.
- Motorcycle and small-vehicle efficiency in many Asian markets is very commonly quoted in km/L, where compact, fuel-efficient vehicles can post genuinely impressive figures (well over 40 km/L for some scooters) that look unfamiliar to readers used to seeing mpg or L/100km instead.
- Converting km/L to the US mpg figure needs both a fuel-volume conversion (litres to US gallons) and a distance conversion (kilometres to miles) applied together, which is why the combined constant used for this conversion looks less intuitive than a simple single-unit factor.
