What the Liters per 100KM Converter does

Liters per 100KM Converter: converts Litres per 100 km to Miles per gallon (US) through fuel economy's base unit, so the result is exact rather than rounded. Example: 8 L/100km = 29.40182288 mpg (US).

The Liters per 100KM Converter takes Value, From and To and returns Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion. Each change is reflected immediately, which suits quick what-if comparisons.

Two industries often use the same word for slightly different quantities. The Liters per 100KM Converter exists to take that particular chore off your hands.

No sign-up, no data collection, no processing queue, just code running locally.

What do the Liters per 100KM Converter fields mean?

The Liters per 100KM Converter uses 3 inputs. Starting values are already in place, which saves the usual blank-form hesitation about what a field wants.

How does the Liters per 100KM Converter work?

L/100km and mpg (US) are inverse measures, one counts fuel per distance, the other distance per fuel

Because they are reciprocals, you cannot convert between them by multiplying: halving L/100km does not halve mpg (US). The conversion goes through litres per 100 km, and small differences matter: the US and imperial gallons are not the same size.

The constants come from the SI brochure and the 1959 international yard-and-pound agreement. For quantities defined empirically rather than by treaty, the current CODATA or IAU value is used instead.

These are the values the Liters per 100KM Converter loads by default, and the result it produces from them. The figures are the tool’s live defaults and its live output, so you can reproduce them exactly.

Litres per 100 km

Litres per 100 kilometres (L/100km) is the standard fuel-economy unit across most of the world outside North America, and unlike mpg, it scales the intuitive way. A smaller L/100km number always means better efficiency, and the numbers behave linearly for combining or averaging trips.

Worth knowing

  • This is exactly why L/100km avoids the averaging trap that catches mpg figures: because it directly measures fuel used per fixed distance, averaging L/100km values across multiple trips (weighted by distance) gives a genuinely correct combined figure, unlike averaging mpg.
  • Converting to mpg (US) uses a fixed but non-intuitive-looking constant (235.214583 divided by the mpg value gives L/100km, and vice versa) precisely because the two units run in opposite directions, one measures distance per unit fuel, the other fuel per unit distance.
  • Official fuel-economy and emissions testing in the EU and many other markets is reported in L/100km specifically because regulators and manufacturers need a metric that combines and compares consistently across different testing conditions and vehicle mixes.

How to use it

  1. Put Value.
  2. Pick a value for From: the options are Litres per 100 km (L/100km), Kilometres per litre (km/L), Miles per gallon (US) (mpg (US)), Miles per gallon (imperial) (mpg (imp)), Miles per litre (mi/L) or Gallons per 100 miles (US) (gal/100mi).
  3. Pick a value for To: the options are Litres per 100 km (L/100km), Kilometres per litre (km/L), Miles per gallon (US) (mpg (US)), Miles per gallon (imperial) (mpg (imp)), Miles per litre (mi/L) or Gallons per 100 miles (US) (gal/100mi).
  4. The tool reacts immediately rather than waiting for you to finish the form.
  5. The results panel then shows Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion.
  6. The link encodes your inputs, so saving it is enough to reproduce the result later.

What this tool does not do

  • Repeated conversions compound rounding, so convert once from the original value where you can.
  • Conversion factors use SI definitions; some industries use their own rounded factors.
  • The output is a number, not a judgement. Deciding what it means is still your job.
  • Check that each figure is in the unit the label asks for; that is the most common source of a wrong result.

Frequently asked questions

Value, From and To. That is the whole form. Defaults are loaded for all of them, which makes it easy to isolate the effect of a single variable.

With the values loaded when the page opens, result comes out as 29.40182288 mpg (US). That number tracks the inputs, so a small edit shows its sensitivity immediately.
