What the Calorie Converter does

Calorie Converter: 1 cal = 4.184 J, so multiply a calorie (thermochemical) value by 4.184 to get joule, or divide to go back. Example: 1 cal = 4.184 J.

From Value, From and To, this tool derives Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion. Each change is reflected immediately, which suits quick what-if comparisons.

Two industries often use the same word for slightly different quantities. The Calorie Converter exists to take that particular chore off your hands.

No sign-up, no data collection, no processing queue, just code running locally.

The method, a field-by-field reference and a worked example built from the defaults are all on this page.

What do the Calorie Converter fields mean?

The Calorie Converter uses 3 inputs. Starting values are already in place, which saves the usual blank-form hesitation about what a field wants.

FieldWhat to enterDefault
Value required 1
From choose from Joule (J), Kilojoule (kJ), Megajoule (MJ), Calorie (thermochemical) (cal), Kilocalorie (food calorie) (kcal) or Watt hour (Wh) Calorie (thermochemical) (cal)
To choose from Joule (J), Kilojoule (kJ), Megajoule (MJ), Calorie (thermochemical) (cal), Kilocalorie (food calorie) (kcal) or Watt hour (Wh) Joule (J)

How does the Calorie Converter work?

1 cal = 4.184 J → result = value × 4.184

Both units are converted through energy's base unit (J), so any of the 12 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.

Factors follow the internationally agreed definitions. The inch has been exactly 25.4 mm since 1959, and an exact definition is used wherever one exists. Where a unit is fixed by measurement rather than by agreement, the accepted CODATA or IAU value is used.

Worked example

These are the values the Calorie Converter loads by default, and the result it produces from them. The figures are the tool’s live defaults and its live output, so you can reproduce them exactly.

Calories and joules

1 calorie (thermochemical definition) equals exactly 4.184 joules. This is the small calorie, the unit originally defined as the energy needed to raise 1 gram of water by 1°C, not the food "Calorie," which is 1,000 times larger.

Worth knowing

  • This distinction: small calorie vs. large (food) Calorie, sometimes written with a capital C to mark the difference. Is genuinely one of the most common points of confusion in everyday nutrition, since nutrition labels almost always mean the large kilocalorie even when they just say "calories."
  • In physics and chemistry contexts (specific heat calculations, for instance), "calorie" reliably means the small, 4.184-joule unit used here, with no ambiguity: it’s specifically the food-related usage that causes the mix-up.
  • The joule has been the SI-preferred unit for all forms of energy for decades, but the calorie has proven remarkably persistent in nutrition specifically because of long-established convention and consumer familiarity.

How to use it

  1. Fill in Value.
  2. Pick a value for From: the options are Joule (J), Kilojoule (kJ), Megajoule (MJ), Calorie (thermochemical) (cal), Kilocalorie (food calorie) (kcal) or Watt hour (Wh).
  3. Pick a value for To: the options are Joule (J), Kilojoule (kJ), Megajoule (MJ), Calorie (thermochemical) (cal), Kilocalorie (food calorie) (kcal) or Watt hour (Wh).
  4. Live output means you can search for a target value by nudging an input up and down.
  5. The panel reports Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion.
  6. The link encodes your inputs, so saving it is enough to reproduce the result later.

What this tool does not do

  • Repeated conversions compound rounding, so convert once from the original value where you can.
  • Conversion factors use SI definitions; some industries use their own rounded factors.
  • Nothing is saved between visits, so keep your own record of anything you need again.
  • Confirm the units before you act on the output. The arithmetic is only as sound as what went in.

Frequently asked questions

Just Value, From and To. Defaults are loaded for all of them, which means a single edit is enough to get a meaningful answer.

With the values loaded when the page opens, result comes out as 4.184 J. That number tracks the inputs, so a small edit shows its sensitivity immediately.

No: there is no server involved. Close the tab and the values are gone.

Free, and there is no upsell. The whole tool is the free version.

The output is deterministic. The same inputs always give the same answer, and the method is documented above so you can check it.
