What the Atmosphere Converter does
Atmosphere Converter: 1 atm = 101.325 kPa, so multiply a standard atmosphere value by 101.325 to get kilopascal, or divide to go back. Example: 1 atm = 101.325 kPa.
This converter reads Value, From and To and produces Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion. Everything recomputes live, which makes it easy to test a few scenarios in a row.
Unit mistakes are quietly expensive. They have wrecked spacecraft and ruined recipes alike. The Atmosphere Converter exists to take that particular chore off your hands.
Your data stays on your machine. Once the page has loaded you could disconnect entirely and it would still work.
Each field is explained further down, along with the method and a worked example that uses the default values.
What do the Atmosphere Converter fields mean?
The Atmosphere Converter uses 3 inputs. The fields arrive populated, which makes it easy to nudge a single figure and watch what moves.
| Field | What to enter | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Value | required | 1 |
| From | choose from Pascal (Pa), Hectopascal (hPa), Kilopascal (kPa), Megapascal (MPa), Bar (bar) or Millibar (mbar) | Standard atmosphere (atm) |
| To | choose from Pascal (Pa), Hectopascal (hPa), Kilopascal (kPa), Megapascal (MPa), Bar (bar) or Millibar (mbar) | Kilopascal (kPa) |
How does the Atmosphere Converter work?
Both units are converted through pressure's base unit (Pa), so any of the 12 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Every factor here is the defined one, not a textbook approximation. That matters more than it sounds: rounding a factor early is the usual reason two converters disagree in the fourth decimal place.
Worked example
These are the values the Atmosphere Converter loads by default, and the result it produces from them. The numbers below come straight from the default inputs, so you can verify them against the live tool.
| Value | 1 |
|---|---|
| From | Standard atmosphere (atm) |
| To | Kilopascal (kPa) |
| Result | 101.325 kPa |
|---|---|
| How it was calculated | 1 atm = 101.325 kPa, so 1 × 101.325 = 101.325 kPa |
| Reverse conversion | 0.0098692327 atm (if you meant 1 kPa) |
The standard atmosphere
The standard atmosphere (atm) is defined as exactly 101,325 pascals: a fixed reference value chosen to approximate typical air pressure at sea level, rather than a measurement that varies with the actual weather on any given day.
Worth knowing
- Real atmospheric pressure fluctuates with weather systems (a strong storm can drop local pressure well below 1 atm, while a stable high-pressure system pushes it above), so "1 atm" is a fixed reference standard, not a live measurement of the pressure outside right now.
- Boiling point depends directly on atmospheric pressure, which is why water boils at a lower temperature at high altitude. At the standard 1 atm, water boils at exactly 100°C, but on a high mountain where the air pressure is meaningfully below 1 atm, it boils at a noticeably lower temperature.
- The unit is deeply embedded in chemistry and physics reference conditions ("standard temperature and pressure," STP) even though bar and pascal are the more modern SI-preferred units for everyday pressure reporting.

How to use it
- Set Value.
- Pick a value for From: the options are Pascal (Pa), Hectopascal (hPa), Kilopascal (kPa), Megapascal (MPa), Bar (bar) or Millibar (mbar).
- Pick a value for To: the options are Pascal (Pa), Hectopascal (hPa), Kilopascal (kPa), Megapascal (MPa), Bar (bar) or Millibar (mbar).
- Skip the submit button; there is not one. Editing is enough.
- Check Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion on the right.
- To keep the result, either copy the link or print the page. Both preserve what is on screen.
What this tool does not do
- Factors use the internationally agreed definitions; some industries round them differently.
- Repeated conversions compound rounding, so convert once from the original value where you can.
- Treat it as a fast first pass, not as the final word on a decision that matters.
- The result inherits any error in the inputs without flagging it.
Frequently asked questions
Only Value, From and To. Defaults are loaded for all of them, so you can change one value at a time and watch how the result responds.
With the values loaded when the page opens, result comes out as 101.325 kPa. Try changing one value. The answer refreshes without a page reload.
No: there is no server involved. Close the tab and the values are gone.
It is free with no conditions: no sign-up, and no limit on how often you use it.
It is accurate to the method shown. Rounding only affects what is displayed, never what is computed.
