What the Yoga Calorie Calculator does

Yoga Calorie Calculator: calculates Calories Burned, Burn Rate (kcal/hour) and MET Used from Your Weight, Duration and Intensity (MET). Example: your weight 70 kg, duration 30 minutes and intensity (MET) 3 gives calories burned 105.

The Yoga Calorie Calculator turns Your Weight, Duration and Intensity (MET) into Calories Burned, Burn Rate (kcal/hour) and MET Used. Change any input and the output follows immediately.

Knowing how a figure is derived makes it much easier to interpret sensibly. That is usually what brings readers checking a number from a clinic here.

Because it is all local, the tool is as fast as your device and as private as your own notes.

Everything needed to verify a result is further down: the fields, the method and one fully worked example.

What do the Yoga Calorie Calculator fields mean?

The Yoga Calorie Calculator uses 3 inputs. None of the boxes start empty. The page loads with a worked set of values you can edit or replace.

FieldWhat to enterDefault
Your Weight measured in kg; accepts 30 to 200 70
Duration measured in minutes; accepts 1 to 480 30
Intensity (MET) accepts 1 to 20 3

How does the Yoga Calorie Calculator work?

Calories Burned, Burn Rate (kcal/hour), MET Used and Summary ← f(Your Weight, Duration, Intensity (MET))

Each output is derived from the inputs above in a single pass; there is no hidden state carried between runs, so the same inputs always give the same calculation.

Bad input produces an error, never a confident-looking wrong answer.

MET values for yoga

Yoga sits at the low end of the MET scale. Gentle hatha is barely above sitting quietly. Its documented benefits are in flexibility, balance, strength and stress, not in energy expenditure.

YogaMET30 min at 70 kg
Hatha, gentle2.592 kcal
Restorative / Yin2.074 kcal
Stretching, general2.385 kcal
Vinyasa flow4.0147 kcal
Power yoga / Ashtanga4.0147 kcal
Bikram / hot yoga5.0184 kcal

MET values are from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al., Med Sci Sports Exerc 43(8):1575-81). One MET is the energy cost of sitting quietly, roughly 3.5 ml of oxygen per kilogram per minute.

What changes the number

  • A 60-minute hatha class burns roughly what a 25-minute brisk walk does. That is not an argument against yoga; it is an argument against tracking it as cardio.
  • Hot yoga’s higher figure comes partly from thermoregulation rather than muscular work, and the extra sweat loss is water rather than fat.
  • Isometric holds cost less energy than they feel like they should, because there is no external work being done.
  • Published estimates for yoga vary more than for most activities, because class intensity is so inconsistent.

These figures are population averages. Individual variation of 10–20% is normal, and the compendium itself is drawn from studies with modest sample sizes. Use the result to compare activities against each other, which it does well, rather than as an exact measure of what you personally burned.

How to use it

  1. Key in Your Weight in kg (30 to 200).
  2. Fill in Duration in minutes (1 to 480).
  3. Type Intensity (MET) (1 to 20).
  4. There is nothing to click. The answer keeps pace with your edits.
  5. Read Calories Burned, Burn Rate (kcal/hour), MET Used and Summary in the results panel.
  6. Use Copy Link if you want the same setup again later, or Print for a paper copy.

What this tool does not do

  • Body composition, ethnicity and age all shift what a "normal" result means for an individual.
  • Population-level formulas cannot account for medical conditions, medication or pregnancy.
  • Treat it as a fast first pass, not as the final word on a decision that matters.
  • A number that passes validation has been checked for plausibility, not for correctness.

Frequently asked questions

Enter Your Weight in kg and Duration in minutes. Each field states its unit next to the input, and outputs are labelled the same way.

Your Weight accepts 30 to 200 kg. The range is enforced before the calculation runs, so a bad entry never reaches the formula.

With the values loaded when the page opens, calories burned comes out as 105. Nudge one field at a time to see which one the answer is most sensitive to.

No. There is no account, no session and no storage. The values exist only while the tab is open.

It reports what the standard equation gives. Clinicians treat that output as one input among many, alongside history, examination and labs, and so should you.
