What the Swimming Calorie Calculator does
Swimming Calorie Calculator: calculates Calories Burned, Burn Rate (kcal/hour) and MET Used from Your Weight, Duration and Intensity (MET). Example: your weight 70 kg, duration 30 minutes and intensity (MET) 8 gives calories burned 280.
Enter Your Weight, Duration and Intensity (MET) and the Swimming Calorie Calculator reports Calories Burned, Burn Rate (kcal/hour) and MET Used. The result recalculates on every keystroke without a button press or a page reload.
It is mostly used by people tracking a goal. Context matters more than the number itself. Age, build and activity all shift it.
Everything happens inside this page. Nothing you type is sent to a server, and there is nothing for us to store.
The meaning of each field, the formula in use, and a worked example that starts from the default inputs are all further down.
What do the Swimming Calorie Calculator fields mean?
The Swimming Calorie Calculator uses 3 inputs. The defaults are there to be replaced. They exist so the tool is never showing an empty result.
| Field | What to enter | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Your Weight | measured in kg; accepts 30 to 200 | 70 |
| Duration | measured in minutes; accepts 1 to 480 | 30 |
| Intensity (MET) | accepts 1 to 20 | 8 |
How does the Swimming Calorie Calculator work?
Each output is derived from the inputs above in a single pass; there is no hidden state carried between runs, so the same inputs always give the same calculation.
Validation is deliberately strict: silently coercing a bad value is how wrong numbers get trusted.
Worked example
These are the values the Swimming Calorie Calculator loads by default, and the result it produces from them. These are the tool’s own default values and the result they produce, not an invented illustration.
| Your Weight | 70 kg |
|---|---|
| Duration | 30 minutes |
| Intensity (MET) | 8 |
| Calories Burned | 280 |
|---|---|
| Burn Rate (kcal/hour) | 560 |
| MET Used | 8.0 |
| Summary | About 280 kcal burned in 30 min of Swimming. |
MET values for swimming
Swimming has the widest MET spread of any common activity, from 3.5 for treading water to 13.8 for butterfly. Stroke choice changes the answer more than effort does.
| Swimming | MET | 30 min at 70 kg |
|---|---|---|
| Treading water, moderate effort | 3.5 | 129 kcal |
| Leisurely, not laps | 6.0 | 221 kcal |
| Backstroke, recreational | 4.8 | 176 kcal |
| Freestyle, slow to moderate laps | 5.8 | 213 kcal |
| Breaststroke, general | 5.3 | 195 kcal |
| Freestyle, fast / vigorous laps | 9.8 | 360 kcal |
| Butterfly, general | 13.8 | 507 kcal |
MET values are from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al., Med Sci Sports Exerc 43(8):1575-81). One MET is the energy cost of sitting quietly, roughly 3.5 ml of oxygen per kilogram per minute.
What changes the number
- Stroke efficiency dominates. A trained swimmer burns considerably less than a novice covering the same distance, because most of a beginner’s energy goes into drag.
- Water conducts heat about 25 times faster than air, so cooler water raises energy cost through thermoregulation.
- Swimming is non-weight-bearing, so body mass affects the total less than it does in running or walking.
- The buoyancy that makes swimming joint-friendly also removes the impact loading that benefits bone density.
These figures are population averages. Individual variation of 10–20% is normal, and the compendium itself is drawn from studies with modest sample sizes. Use the result to compare activities against each other, which it does well, rather than as an exact measure of what you personally burned.

How to use it
- Enter Your Weight in kg (30 to 200).
- Set Duration in minutes (1 to 480).
- Put Intensity (MET) (1 to 20).
- Because it recalculates as you type, you can dial a value in rather than guessing and re-running.
- You get Calories Burned, Burn Rate (kcal/hour), MET Used and Summary back.
- Both Copy Link and Print capture the current state, so pick whichever suits how you file things.
What this tool does not do
- Body composition, ethnicity and age all shift what a "normal" result means.
- These formulas come from population averages and cannot account for your medical history.
- The result reflects the moment you ran it; anything that changes over time is not tracked.
- It validates ranges, not intent. A value can be accepted and still be the wrong one to use.
Frequently asked questions
Enter Your Weight in kg and Duration in minutes. Look for the unit beside each label; the result is reported in a stated unit as well.
Your Weight accepts 30 to 200 kg. Out-of-range entries are refused up front, which is safer than silently clamping them.
With the values loaded when the page opens, calories burned comes out as 280. It recalculates the moment an input changes, which makes comparing scenarios quick.
No. Your measurements stay on your device. Health numbers are nobody else’s business, including ours.
It costs nothing, and there is no limit on repeat use.
Good enough to track a trend over time, not precise enough to act on a single reading. Repeat measurements under the same conditions tell you far more than one number does.
