How does the Meter to Yard work?

Metres and yards
1 yard is defined as exactly 0.9144 metres (3 feet), fixed by the 1959 international agreement, so 1 metre equals exactly 1.0936133… yards.
Worth knowing
- Field-sport dimensions are the main place this conversion is still needed: American football fields are measured in yards, while most other stadium sports (football/soccer pitches, athletics tracks) use metres. A 100-yard football field is about 91.4 m long, close to but not the same as a 100 m running track.
- Fabric and carpet are traditionally sold by the yard in the US and by the metre almost everywhere else, so import/export price comparisons need this exact conversion rather than a rounded one.
- A rough mental shortcut is that a metre and a yard are "close enough" for a casual estimate. A metre is about 9% longer than a yard, small enough to overlook for pacing out a garden but not for cutting material to a precise length.
