What the Mebibyte Converter does
Mebibyte Converter: 1 MiB = 1.048576 MB, so multiply a mebibyte (1024 kib) value by 1.048576 to get megabyte (1000 kb), or divide to go back. Example: 1 MiB = 1.048576 MB.
Enter Value, From and To and the Mebibyte Converter reports Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion. You can nudge a single number and watch the effect straight away.
Most people who open the Mebibyte Converter are anyone working across two measurement systems. Having the exact factor matters more than a rough mental estimate.
There is no account, no upload and no server round trip, because the page does the work itself.
The meaning of each field, the formula in use, and a worked example that starts from the default inputs are all further down.
What do the Mebibyte Converter fields mean?
The Mebibyte Converter uses 3 inputs. You do not have to fill everything in before seeing an answer; the starting values already produce one.
| Field | What to enter | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Value | required | 1 |
| From | choose from Bit (b), Byte (B), Kilobyte (1000 B) (kB), Megabyte (1000 kB) (MB), Gigabyte (1000 MB) (GB) or Terabyte (1000 GB) (TB) | Mebibyte (1024 KiB) (MiB) |
| To | choose from Bit (b), Byte (B), Kilobyte (1000 B) (kB), Megabyte (1000 kB) (MB), Gigabyte (1000 MB) (GB) or Terabyte (1000 GB) (TB) | Megabyte (1000 kB) (MB) |
How does the Mebibyte Converter work?
Both units are converted through data's base unit (byte), so any of the 11 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Definitions are taken from the SI system where one exists, and from CODATA or the IAU where a unit is established by measurement. No factor is rounded before the calculation.
Worked example
These are the values the Mebibyte Converter loads by default, and the result it produces from them. This is the worked example the page starts from, reproduced here so you can check the arithmetic.
| Value | 1 |
|---|---|
| From | Mebibyte (1024 KiB) (MiB) |
| To | Megabyte (1000 kB) (MB) |
| Result | 1.048576 MB |
|---|---|
| How it was calculated | 1 MiB = 1.048576 MB, so 1 × 1.048576 = 1.048576 MB |
| Reverse conversion | 0.95367432 MiB (if you meant 1 MB) |
Mebibytes vs. megabytes
A mebibyte (MiB) is exactly 1,024 kibibytes (1,048,576 bytes, 2²⁰): the binary equivalent of the decimal megabyte (1,000,000 bytes), differing from it by about 4.9%.
Worth knowing
- Digital camera memory cards and older computer RAM specifications have historically used the binary (MiB-equivalent) meaning of "megabyte," while file-size reporting on the web and in most modern software increasingly uses the true decimal megabyte. Mixing the two sources in one comparison can make otherwise-identical file sizes look mismatched.
- The IEC binary-prefix naming (MiB, GiB, TiB) exists precisely so that "megabyte" can be reserved unambiguously for the decimal, SI-consistent meaning, but real-world software adoption of the distinction remains inconsistent even now.
- When precision genuinely matters (verifying a backup completed correctly, calculating exact storage requirements for a data centre), checking which convention a specific tool or vendor uses is worth the extra step, rather than assuming either definition by default.

How to use it
- Enter Value.
- Pick a value for From: the options are Bit (b), Byte (B), Kilobyte (1000 B) (kB), Megabyte (1000 kB) (MB), Gigabyte (1000 MB) (GB) or Terabyte (1000 GB) (TB).
- Pick a value for To: the options are Bit (b), Byte (B), Kilobyte (1000 B) (kB), Megabyte (1000 kB) (MB), Gigabyte (1000 MB) (GB) or Terabyte (1000 GB) (TB).
- Because it recalculates as you type, you can dial a value in rather than guessing and re-running.
- You get Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion back.
- Copy Link puts the current inputs in the URL, so bookmarking it brings the same numbers back.
What this tool does not do
- Repeated conversions compound rounding, so convert once from the original value where possible.
- Factors use the internationally agreed definitions; some industries round them differently.
- The output is a number, not a judgement. Deciding what it means is still your job.
- It validates ranges, not intent. A value can be accepted and still be the wrong one to use.

Only Value, From and To. Every box already holds a working value, meaning you can explore the calculation before committing to real figures.
With the values loaded when the page opens, result comes out as 1.048576 MB. The figure is derived from the inputs above, so it updates whenever they do.
