The biswa (South Asian land unit)
A biswa is traditionally defined as 1/20th of a bigha, but since the bigha itself varies by region, the biswa inherits that same regional variation. This tool uses a standard value (66.8902 m²) based on the commonly quoted 1,600-square-yard bigha.
Worth knowing
- Because it’s defined as a fraction of the bigha rather than as an independent standard, any uncertainty about which bigha applies in a given state carries directly through to the biswa figure as well.
- It’s used primarily in North Indian states (particularly Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and parts of Rajasthan) for describing smaller plots of land than a full bigha would conveniently express.
