How does the PSI Converter work?
Both units are converted through pressure's base unit (Pa), so any of the 12 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Where a unit has an exact legal definition, that exact value is used rather than a rounded one. The 1959 international agreement fixing the inch at 25.4 mm is the best-known example; the same principle applies throughout.

Pounds per square inch (psi)
1 psi equals exactly 6,894.757293168 pascals: derived from the exact pound-force and square-inch definitions it’s built from, and the standard pressure unit across the US for tires, plumbing, and countless consumer and industrial specifications.
Worth knowing
- Standard car tire pressure is typically 30 to 35 psi, bicycle tires much higher (commonly 80 to 130 psi for road bikes), and residential water-supply pressure is typically 40 to 80 psi, three everyday contexts that use the same unit at very different magnitudes.
- Outside the US, the equivalent everyday specifications are almost always given in kPa or bar instead, so psi figures on imported equipment or in translated manuals often need converting for a metric-country reader (or vice versa for US buyers of imported gear).
- Despite the name, psi measures pressure (force per area), not force alone or area alone. A common simplification error is treating a psi rating as if it directly described the strength of a material rather than a pressure being applied to or withstood by it.

What this tool does not do
- Conversion factors use SI definitions; some industries use their own rounded factors.
- Repeated conversions compound rounding, so convert once from the original value where possible.
- Precision beyond what the inputs justify is not meaningful, however many digits appear.
- A number that passes validation has been checked for plausibility, not for correctness.
