What the Nautical Mile to KM does
Nautical Mile to KM: 1 nmi = 1.852 km, so multiply a nautical mile value by 1.852 to get kilometre, or divide to go back. Example: 1 nmi = 1.852 km.
The Nautical Mile to KM takes Value, From and To and returns Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion. Each change is reflected immediately, which suits quick what-if comparisons.
Two industries often use the same word for slightly different quantities. The Nautical Mile to KM exists to take that particular chore off your hands.
No sign-up, no data collection, no processing queue, just code running locally.

What do the Nautical Mile to KM fields mean?
The Nautical Mile to KM uses 3 inputs. Starting values are already in place, which saves the usual blank-form hesitation about what a field wants.
| Field | What to enter | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Value | required | 1 |
| From | choose from Nanometre (nm), Micrometre (µm), Angstrom (Å), Millimetre (mm), Centimetre (cm) or Metre (m) | Nautical mile (nmi) |
| To | choose from Nanometre (nm), Micrometre (µm), Angstrom (Å), Millimetre (mm), Centimetre (cm) or Metre (m) | Kilometre (km) |
How does the Nautical Mile to KM work?
Both units are converted through length's base unit (m), so any of the 19 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
The constants come from the SI brochure and the 1959 international yard-and-pound agreement. For quantities defined empirically rather than by treaty, the current CODATA or IAU value is used instead.
Worked example
These are the values the Nautical Mile to KM loads by default, and the result it produces from them. The figures are the tool’s live defaults and its live output, so you can reproduce them exactly.
| Value | 1 |
|---|---|
| From | Nautical mile (nmi) |
| To | Kilometre (km) |
| Result | 1.852 km |
|---|---|
| How it was calculated | 1 nmi = 1.852 km, so 1 × 1.852 = 1.852 km |
| Reverse conversion | 0.5399568 nmi (if you meant 1 km) |
Nautical miles and kilometres
1 nautical mile equals exactly 1,852 metres (1.852 km) by international agreement (1929): distinct from, and about 15% longer than, the 1,609.344 m statute mile used on land.
Worth knowing
- The 1,852 m figure was chosen to approximate one minute of arc of latitude on Earth’s surface (roughly 1,852.2 m on average), so a vessel’s position expressed in nautical miles from the equator lines up almost exactly with the latitude scale on a chart.
- Confusing this with the statute mile understates distance by about 15% if you mistakenly treat a nautical-mile figure as a regular mile: a meaningful error in flight-planning or maritime navigation.
- Aircraft and ship speeds in knots convert to km/h by roughly ×1.852, the same constant used here for distance.

How to use it
- Put Value.
- Pick a value for From: the options are Nanometre (nm), Micrometre (µm), Angstrom (Å), Millimetre (mm), Centimetre (cm) or Metre (m).
- Pick a value for To: the options are Nanometre (nm), Micrometre (µm), Angstrom (Å), Millimetre (mm), Centimetre (cm) or Metre (m).
- The output refreshes live, so you can stop as soon as the number looks right.
- The results panel then shows Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion.
- The link encodes your inputs, so saving it is enough to reproduce the result later.
What this tool does not do
- Repeated conversions compound rounding, so convert once from the original value where you can.
- Conversion factors use SI definitions; some industries use their own rounded factors.
- The method is fixed. There is no option to substitute your own formula.
- Check that each figure is in the unit the label asks for; that is the most common source of a wrong result.
Frequently asked questions
3 things: Value, From and To. Defaults are loaded for all of them, which means a single edit is enough to get a meaningful answer.
With the values loaded when the page opens, result comes out as 1.852 km. That number tracks the inputs, so a small edit shows its sensitivity immediately.
Nothing is stored. The page has no back end to send data to, and holds your input only in memory.
Free, and there is no upsell. The whole tool is the free version.
It implements the published definition directly, without shortcuts or approximations.
