What the Kilocalorie Converter does
Kilocalorie Converter: 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, so multiply a kilocalorie (food calorie) value by 4.184 to get kilojoule, or divide to go back. Example: 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ.
Give the Kilocalorie Converter your Value, From and To and it works out Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion. There is no submit step; the numbers move as you adjust them.
It is mostly used by engineers checking a datasheet. Converting once from the original figure beats chaining approximations.
Nothing leaves the tab. You can watch your browser network panel while you use it and see for yourself.
The field table, the method and a worked example are documented after the tool for anyone who wants to check the working.
What do the Kilocalorie Converter fields mean?
The Kilocalorie Converter uses 3 inputs. Rather than an empty form you get a filled one, useful when you only want to test a single change.
| Field | What to enter | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Value | required | 1 |
| From | choose from Joule (J), Kilojoule (kJ), Megajoule (MJ), Calorie (thermochemical) (cal), Kilocalorie (food calorie) (kcal) or Watt hour (Wh) | Kilocalorie (food calorie) (kcal) |
| To | choose from Joule (J), Kilojoule (kJ), Megajoule (MJ), Calorie (thermochemical) (cal), Kilocalorie (food calorie) (kcal) or Watt hour (Wh) | Kilojoule (kJ) |
How does the Kilocalorie Converter work?
Both units are converted through energy's base unit (J), so any of the 12 units in the dropdowns can be paired in either direction without loss of accuracy.
Every factor here is the defined one, not a textbook approximation. That matters more than it sounds: rounding a factor early is the usual reason two converters disagree in the fourth decimal place.
Worked example
These are the values the Kilocalorie Converter loads by default, and the result it produces from them. The defaults produce the result shown here; change any of them and the answer moves.
| Value | 1 |
|---|---|
| From | Kilocalorie (food calorie) (kcal) |
| To | Kilojoule (kJ) |
| Result | 4.184 kJ |
|---|---|
| How it was calculated | 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, so 1 × 4.184 = 4.184 kJ |
| Reverse conversion | 0.23900574 kcal (if you meant 1 kJ) |
Kilocalories: the real "food Calorie"
The nutrition-label "Calorie" (usually capitalised, though rarely printed that way in practice) is actually a kilocalorie: 1,000 small calories, or exactly 4,184 joules. This is arguably the single most commonly misunderstood energy unit in everyday life.
Worth knowing
- A food listed as "200 calories" on a US label means 200 kilocalories (836,800 joules) in scientific terms. The label’s casual use of "calories" to mean "kilocalories" is technically imprecise but is the universal convention in nutrition labelling worldwide.
- Some countries’ nutrition labels list energy in kilojoules instead of, or alongside, kilocalories: 1 kcal equals exactly 4.184 kJ, so a "1,000 kJ" snack and a "239 kcal" snack describe the same energy content.
- Daily calorie needs for an adult are commonly cited in the range of roughly 1,800 to 2,800 kcal depending on age, sex and activity level, always referring to the large, kilocalorie-scale "Calorie," never the small 4.184-joule calorie used in physics.

How to use it
- Set Value.
- Pick a value for From: the options are Joule (J), Kilojoule (kJ), Megajoule (MJ), Calorie (thermochemical) (cal), Kilocalorie (food calorie) (kcal) or Watt hour (Wh).
- Pick a value for To: the options are Joule (J), Kilojoule (kJ), Megajoule (MJ), Calorie (thermochemical) (cal), Kilocalorie (food calorie) (kcal) or Watt hour (Wh).
- Results update continuously rather than on submit.
- Check Result, How it was calculated and Reverse conversion on the right.
- If you need a record, Copy Link saves the inputs and Print produces a clean page.
What this tool does not do
- Conversion factors use SI definitions; some industries use their own rounded factors.
- Repeated conversions compound rounding, so convert once from the original value where possible.
- Values outside the documented ranges are rejected rather than approximated.
- The tool trusts your numbers completely, so a mis-keyed digit propagates straight through.
Frequently asked questions
Just Value, From and To. A starting value is in place for each, so nothing is mandatory before you see a result.
With the values loaded when the page opens, result comes out as 4.184 kJ. Edit any input and that figure moves with it.
No. There is no upload step, no database, and nothing to delete afterwards.
No cost and no account. Use it as often as you like.
There is no estimation step. The result is computed, not inferred.
