The oil barrel
The oil barrel is defined as exactly 42 US gallons (158.987294928 litres): a unit that has nothing to do with a barrel’s literal physical size today and everything to do with 19th-century industry history.
Worth knowing
- The 42-gallon standard dates to the 1860s Pennsylvania oil boom, when producers settled on that size (larger than the standard 40-gallon whiskey barrel of the time, reportedly to account for evaporation, leakage and to reassure buyers they weren’t being shorted) as the industry-standard container.
- Modern oil is transported in tankers and pipelines, not literal wooden barrels, but the 42-US-gallon "barrel" (bbl) remains the standard unit for quoting crude oil volumes and prices worldwide, including in countries that use litres for everything else.
- This is a different unit from a beer barrel (the US beer barrel is 31 US gallons, and the UK brewery barrel is 36 imperial gallons), so "barrel" without context is genuinely ambiguous across industries, not just across countries.
