The pixel budget behind Google’s snippet
Google truncates search snippets by rendered pixel width, not character count, which is why two titles with the same character count can behave completely differently depending on how many wide letters (W, M) versus narrow ones (i, l) they contain.

Worth knowing
- Google has never published exact pixel or character limits for either field. Every number here, and this tool’s own measurements, are commonly cited approximations from third-party research, and Google has changed snippet lengths before without announcement.
- Titles are cut at a word boundary, not mid-word, with an ellipsis appended when they are.
- Google frequently rewrites the displayed title and description entirely, pulling from page headings or body content instead of your tags. A well-tuned tag improves the odds of being used as written without guaranteeing it.
- Fitting the pixel budget is a floor, not a strategy. The words themselves, and whether they match what the searcher actually typed, matter far more than whether they technically fit.
