What the VAT Calculator does

VAT Calculator: calculates Base Amount, GST Amount and Total from Amount, GST Rate and Calculation. Formula: Tax = base x rate / 100 (adding) | base = total / (1 + rate/100) (removing). Example: amount 1000 ₹, GST rate 5% and calculation Add GST gives base amount ₹1,000.00.

Point it at Amount, GST Rate and Calculation and it returns Base Amount, GST Amount and Total. Enter what you need and trigger it when you are ready.

It is mostly used by people planning a budget. Lenders present the same deal in different ways, so a like-for-like number is worth having.

Everything happens inside this page. Nothing you type is sent to a server, and there is nothing for us to store.

The sections that follow cover the fields, the method, and one full example computed from the defaults.

What do the VAT Calculator fields mean?

The VAT Calculator uses 3 inputs. The form opens pre-filled, so the fastest way in is usually to overwrite the one field you actually care about.

FieldWhat to enterDefault
Amount measured in ₹ 1000
GST Rate choose from 5%, 12%, 18% or 28% 5%
Calculation choose from Add GST or Remove GST Add GST

How does the VAT Calculator work?

Tax = base x rate / 100 (adding) | base = total / (1 + rate/100) (removing)

Removing tax is not the same as subtracting the rate from the total, which is the most common mistake with this calculation.

The guard clauses run before the formula does, which is why mistakes surface next to the field.

These are the values the VAT Calculator loads by default, and the result it produces from them. These are the tool’s own default values and the result they produce, not an invented illustration.

What this tool does not do

  • Advertised rates are usually the best-case tier, not the one most applicants are offered.
  • Fees, taxes and eligibility rules vary by product and are not included unless there is a field for them.
  • The result reflects the moment you ran it; anything that changes over time is not tracked.
  • Results are only as good as the inputs. Check your units before reading anything into the output.

Frequently asked questions

Enter Amount in ₹. Look for the unit beside each label; the result is reported in a stated unit as well.

With the values loaded when the page opens, base amount comes out as ₹1,000.00. It recalculates the moment an input changes, which makes comparing scenarios quick.

It never leaves the tab. The page does the work itself rather than asking a server to.

It costs nothing, and there is no limit on repeat use.

The formula is standard and the output is exact. Use it to compare scenarios against each other rather than to predict a specific figure on a specific statement.
