Worth knowing about estimating ovulation and the fertile window
This calculator estimates ovulation as occurring 14 days before the next expected period. A reasonable average, but the actual timing of ovulation varies meaningfully between individuals, and cycle to cycle for the same person, especially outside a textbook 28-day cycle.
Conventions and limitations
- The "14 days before the next period" rule comes from the luteal phase (the time from ovulation to the next period) being relatively consistent at roughly 12 to 16 days for most people, while the earlier follicular phase is the part that actually varies with cycle length, which is why the calculation counts back from the end of the cycle rather than forward from the start.
- The fertile window shown, a handful of days around the estimated ovulation date, accounts for sperm survival time, up to about 5 days, as well as the egg’s much shorter viable window after release. It is a range, not a single-day event, even under ideal estimation.
- This is a statistical estimate based on average cycle behaviour, not a direct measurement of an individual’s hormone levels. Methods like ovulation predictor kits or basal body temperature tracking observe the body directly and are more precise for anyone timing this closely.
